I had a dream I wasn’t allowed to be alone on Halloween.

In this dream I was turning in something to my professor.

Her hands grabbed my wrists.

“It’s Halloween tonight,” she said. “Be sure to lock your front and back doors.”

I know.

“Weird things happen on that night.”

Believe me, I know.

I’m with my friends now and they’re talking about watching a scary movie at her house for Halloween.

Why don’t they come over to my house?

Why don’t you come over to my house?

“What?”

I’m crying to them at this point. I tell them that I don’t want to be home alone on Halloween. That I’m always alone and that everyone avoids me.

I want to be wanted too.

I want to feel important.

Please don’t leave me alone.

Out of friendship (or pity?) they agree to come over.

It is evening now, but it will be dark soon.

I lead them up wide porcelain steps that extend as long as a room but are only as high as a shoebox.

My house is made out of red and ivory with frozen angels and demons staring down at us. Their faces are etched in worry and warning as we wander below them.

Before opening the door I turn to them.

You have three rules before entering I told them.

Don’t look at anyone in the eye.

Don’t act surprised.

Don’t let them know they’re not normal.

They nod at me but I’m not sure they take me seriously; their fault.

We walk into the mansion where the headless man greets me.

A few other mutilated visitors contribute their greetings, their bodies ranging from cuts and bruises or horrific spike piercings sticking out of places that aren’t typical.

My friends are petrified.

I glare before pushing one of them against the wall.

I hiss.

Don’t let them know.

My friends nod and we walk further along into a large room.

There’s nothing but carpets. No furniture.

I tell them to stand in the middle.

What is this room? They ask.

A room? This isn’t a room.

A man follows us into a room and pulls a lever.

It’s an elevator I tell them.

to where?

He pulls the lever and the room descends at such a speed that our bodies begin to hit the ceiling.

If it weren’t for the padding we would be squashed.

We descend for maybe five floors before stopping. The carpets on the bottom are so thick and nice that they cushion our fall.

“Hungry, madame?”

The man is talking to me. I tell him no and that we would be let out here.

We leave the elevator into a smaller one. This one looks more standard.

“Jesus, how many floors is this place?”

More importantly,

“Hey, why are we always going down?”

I stare at them and then look ahead.

The elevator descends at an alarming speed but our bodies don’t move

we pass floors

we pass bodies

we pass dirt and flames

and fire and circles

we’re passing the river styx and its passengers

we’re passing the damned

the elevator hits floor -994,876

We get out.

It’s a wide room with little walls and ivory and red walls and furniture.

The red and white porcelain creep up the pillars like veins

and the sheer, ceramic chandeliers pose like body tissue hung frozen over our heads.

“This floor is huge.”

This is my room.

I morph the room into my image and makeshift five more beds for my friends.

I turn to see one of them looking out the window.

The city outside is a midnight city scene complimented by dots of yellow-lit windows. If one was to look further among the buildings they would find the ocean lazily meeting the shore in a chaste, but sweet kiss.

“It’s beautiful, but…. it isn’t real, is it?”

No, I tell them. I glamoured the window so that one could never see what was really there.

I sit by them to look outside the window.

I let my hands run through the curtain, it’s sheets lightly tangle in my fingers for a sweet dance before being flirted away by the wind.

One time the glamor broke, I tell them, when I was younger. And it was then I realized where my parents sent me to live.

One of them gasps and it captures our attention.

“There’s a sentence in the ocean.”

Ah, yes.

In the ocean there is a sentence that spells out “We are the numbers…
” followed by room or level numbers.

The numbers always change I tell them.

“That’s so odd, have you ever thought of seeing that face to face?”

My flesh would be burned if I stepped outside this room, I tell them. I can only imagine what it would do to you.

They have a plan to put their souls into the body of stuffed animals so that we can venture the outside world.

It makes sense, since the flames of hell only burn through flesh.

but.

My doubts escape me.

I wake up.
